Computer graphics and design have become essential components in today’s digital age. From movies and video games to sports broadcasts and advertising, the role of computer graphics in enhancing visual experience and storytelling cannot be overstated. As technology evolves, the demand for innovative and captivating graphics continues to grow, making it a crucial field for creative minds.

Umair Mohsin, an overseas Pakistani, has made remarkable contributions to this field, earning him three Emmy Awards. He first gained recognition in 2019 when he won his inaugural Emmy in the “Best Graphics Design” category for his work on NHL Tonight graphics, becoming the first Pakistani to achieve this honor. This year, in 2024, Mohsin and his team collaborated with ESPN and PIXAR to integrate Toy Story characters into sports graphics. This innovative project was nominated in two categories: “Best Graphics Design” and “Best Art Direction,” winning both at a ceremony held at Jazz at Lincoln Centre in New York, USA. Mohsin is currently the only Pakistani with three Emmy Awards.

Born in Karachi, Mohsin moved to Canada to advance his career in graphics and animation. After completing his studies, he sought specialized training in 3D graphics and animation, a field with limited educational resources in Pakistan. He ultimately found a private tutor to help him hone his skills. Reflecting on his early career challenges, Mohsin stated in an interview, “I found a lack of appreciation for my work, which I believe is a challenge all newcomers face in Pakistan. We need to make an effort to start acknowledging and appreciating new talent.” Despite these obstacles, he persevered and relocated to Toronto in 2015, seeking better opportunities.

In Toronto, Mohsin began working with various creative agencies, steadily building his portfolio and reputation. Today, he serves as a Senior Designer and Creative Director in New York, specializing in animation, graphics, and broadcast graphics. His recent achievements have not only brought him personal acclaim but also pride in his homeland. In a recent interview with Amna Malik at Dawn News, Mohsin said, “This is not just an achievement for me and my family but for Pakistan. It’s an honor for all the overseas Pakistanis who are working hard to represent their nation.”

Mohsin attributes much of his recent success to his collaborative efforts with his team, PIXAR, and ESPN, acknowledging the challenges they faced integrating Toy Story characters into sports graphics. Unlike the past, where careers in medicine and engineering dominated, today’s tech-driven world offers vast opportunities in fields like computer graphics. Mohsin’s journey is a testament to this shift. He recalls his father advising him to pursue computer graphics, a decision that led him to make history as the first Pakistani to win three Emmys.

For young aspirants looking to work overseas and achieve success, Mohsin’s advice is clear: “Never stop trying despite the hardships.” He emphasizes the accessibility of learning resources online, encouraging continuous skill development. He also offers a personal touch, inviting budding talents to contact him as he plans to start free mentorship programs.

Currently, Mohsin is working on two projects with Netflix and several with ESPN, continually pushing the boundaries of creativity in computer graphics. His achievements are not just a personal milestone but a source of inspiration and pride for Pakistan, showcasing the potential of overseas Pakistanis in the global arena.
